I went to see Miss Shary Boyle perform with Doug Paisley as Dark Hand and Lamp Light on Saturday night. It was a part of Pleasure Dome‘s programming for this year (and the first PD programme I’ve been to, actually). The place was totally packed – people were sitting on the floor, standing against the walls… It was really exciting to see how popular an art performance/screening could be. I think it was probably all due to Shary Boyle, who the Toronto at world seems to universally love and embrace (myself included).

Her drawings/projections are totally magical and whimsical and strangely funny. I’m always amazed by the impact work has when artists return to an older or antiquated method of production. How they can make work with very simple materials intricate and awe-inspiring, and magical but also totally laboured.
