EMILIA-AMALIA is a Toronto-based feminist experimental working group founded in 2016. The group uses informal knowledge sharing and experimental writing to cultivate relationships of mentorship, collaboration and reciprocal indebtedness between generations of artists, writers, thinkers, curators and practitioners. Our writing and reading groups, film screenings, publications, public talks and workshops are intimate exchanges through which we centre the personal and the political in a desire to activate the undetonated potential of the past. Within our partnerships, we create space to address feminist histories that have been obscured or overlooked.

EMILIA-AMALIA has organized more than 27 film screenings, writing workshops, public talks, performances, and exhibitions independently, and with partner institutions, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Metropole, Art Toronto, the Canadian Filmmakers’ Distribution Centre (CFMDC), Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts, Gallery 44, and Mercer Union, in Toronto, ON; as well as articule, Montreal, the LA Art Book Fair, Los Angeles, and [space] studios, London, UK. We have been awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada Partnership Engage Grant and a Canada Council Research and Creation grant. Our chapbooks can be found on our website and at Art Metropole.
