I have been in New York for the past few days, researching the thesis and seeing some art (some good, some atrocious, but more on that later) and am now madly trying to finish the first draft of said thesis to meet a now-overdue deadline, so my blog updating has been sporadic at best. Arty things that are on my list of stuff to digest and discuss:

– The AGO’s reno and reopening (though the media’s coverage of this makes me think everyone’s probably over it by now)
Catherine Opie‘s solo show at the Guggenheim (awesome)
“theanyspacewhatever” group show at the Guggenheim (awful)
“Reality Check: Truth and Illusion in Contemporary Photography” at the Met (good)

In the meantime, trustworthy Artfag has released a new installment of criticism that encompasses the Toronto Free Gallery’s “All Power to the People” Black Panthers show, the Department of Culture and Ryan Trecartin’s “I-Be Area” screening. One of my favourite witticisms from this issue:

Let us contextualize our comparison before it escapes us: arts funding cuts does not constitute systemic oppression, and one does not take up arms or damage property over them. The Black Panthers responded to their adversaries in kind. The question to be answered by the Department of Culture, and by all Canadian artists, is what is an equal and appropriate response to this government? And darlings, while you ponder, here’s a hint to help you on your way: they don’t spend much, if any, time on either Facebook or YouTube.
